We broke the fast with prunes that we soaked overnight, which was a good, gentle choice for waking up our digestive system. First we drank the soak water and followed it up with our first prune. Below is a picture of us "cheers"-ing our prunes before we officially broke the fast. :) We each had our own jar of prunes (9 ounces of prunes each) but neither of us has been able to finish our jar so far. There may be a few left for tomorrow.

My energy today has been excellent...got a lot done and my focus has been so clear. This evening, I've been putting together recipes and plans for our future raw food meals--so excited! For the next couple of days, we'll be staying away from nuts and seeds to keep from overwhelming our systems... but I have lots of other ideas to work around that!

So... after completing 15 days of just juice, how do we feel? We both feel pretty great! I lost 10 pounds of unwanted fat and David lost around 16. I have no more headaches and as I said before, all of my medical issues have virtually disappeared! Also, I have not mentioned this before but I'm sure a lot of females will be interested in this. I had my period during the fast, which was normal in every way except for one little (big) detail: I had no menstrual cramps whatsoever! First time in my LIFE that has happened! I'm sure as we continue with the raw food, we'll be seeing and feeling other positive changes, and I'll keep you posted!

Ciao!
Welcome to the end of day 14 of our juice fast. David is just getting home from playing basketball and I've been sitting here working on plans for breaking our fast the day after tomorrow.

Feeling good right now but definitely looking forward to getting a punch of energy from whole raw foods. Nevertheless, I am still mixing it up with the juices! I'll start with the fun one... I discovered some blood oranges at the grocery store yesterday and decided to pick up a bag and experiment with it.

Easy recipe for 32 ounces= 6 blood oranges and 1 Red Delicious apple

What to juice: 1 bunch Swiss Chard, 2 cucumbers, 1 lemon, and 1 Red Delicious apple.
I also made a Romaine/lemon/cucumber/Granny Smith apple mixture that is nice. It has a pretty cool lime green color...wish I had gotten a picture of it.

That's all for now...see you on day 15!
Hi all! David and I are closing out the 13th day of our fast!

...But we have made a decision. We are shortening our 48 day juice fast project. We had been considering doing this for the past couple of days for a few reasons:

1. I recovered completely from my health problems, and that was the goal!
2. Even with supplementation, we no longer feel like we are thriving on the fast. Energy has been mostly down the past couple of days and we have been feeling lightheaded...some may say this is due to detox but this feeling is affecting our productivity , which we cannot afford owning our own business.
3. We believe that since we are at a healthy weight at this point and feeling well, we can finish out our cleanse effectively with a 100% raw food diet until the end of Lent.
4. Green juices are starting to taste bad to us. This has never happened to me, but I feel like this is my body telling me to add something or make a change.

So, after some prayer and thought today, along with a talk with a couple of our friends who have done long term juice fasting in the past, we decided to change our plan.

We will juice fast until day 15, meaning we'll break the fast on Thursday. The remainder of the 48 days, we will be eating an all raw vegan diet (raw fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds). This is still a challenge, since we both love our cooked food and we will be seriously healing our bodies with all raw sustenance.

This decision, by the way, does not mean that you can't do a longer fast if it feels right... 48 days just did not turn out to be right for us at this time. I really struggled with this idea at first, because I felt like I was kind of failing at the juice fast. I also didn't want to let hopeful peeps in the blogosphere down...but when it comes down to it, I need to think about achieving optimum health for my body. So I guess you could say there is a good lesson in this experience thus far: PAY ATTENTION TO CUES FROM YOUR BODY!

Hope you still follow and enjoy. After my next two juicy updates, I'll be sharing how we break the fast and look out for some awesome rawsome recipes after the fast is successfully broken! :)
Happy Sunday, everyone! David and I are officially 1/4 of the way through our juice fast!

The past couple of days have been pretty good. David is finally over his hump and feeling great with much less cravings. My last weigh in was yesterday morning and I was at 128 lbs...a few more pounds and I'll be at the weight I was when I got married. David told me I actually look a lot in my build and face like I did when we first started dating in 2006 (although I was almost 15 lbs lighter then than I am right now...but my weight distribution looks much healthier than it used to). Mind you, the main reasons I am doing this are for lent and to clear up pain and health problems that have been plaguing me. The weight/fat loss is a nice bonus though. :)

Last night David and I went out to dinner (at Cracker Barrel) with my family to celebrate my grandmother's 86th birthday. Almost everyone at the table had grilled fish and sides included mashed potatoes, green beans and some kind of apple cobbler. I was craving the biscuits a little bit but David and I sat and watched them eat with the juice we brought. It was a lot easier than the last time we did a no eating dinner with a group. David said the only thing he even was craving at the table was the salad!

So I've been working on mixing up the combinations to keep our fast interesting. My latest experiment was this morning with some plums and a half a bag of tangerines I got yesterday. I decided to call the juice Tangerine Plum Dream.

Tangerine Plum Dream Juice (Yields 4 cups)

5-6 tangerines
2 plums

This stuff tastes awesome, by the way. It ranks right up there with the Sunshine in a Glass juice.

I also picked up some red grapes, peaches, romaine lettuce and a lemon plum yesterday so there will be more experiments to come.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
I'm actually closing out the day with some coconut water. After I got my work done today, I headed to Juices Wild. I grabbed some MSM caplets and a couple of young Thai coconuts. While there, I tried a couple new juice combos. The first one was peach/apple/orange mixed with a little aloe vera juice, which was great. Then I tried cucumber/kiwi/peach. Loved this one--really refreshing and filling combination.

I asked Dan at Juices Wild about this and he suggested trying Spirulina instead. He gave me a couple of samples of Pure Hawaiian Spirulina Pacifica brand spirulina to take home and try, since I've never actually had spirulina. It really is a lot lighter on the palate and David liked it better.
If you are unfamiliar with the health benefits of spirulina, check them out in this video:
Thus far, I've been sharing what comes to mind along the way with this juice fast...but I'm curious as to what you guys want to know about this journey. If you feel so inclined, please comment this time with questions you want addressed and I'll give it my best shot in future posts. ;)

Today we enjoyed watermelon/lime juice, kale/cabbage/apple/lemon/cucumber juice, carrot/apple/ginger juice and as I mentioned earlier, the two awesome combinations from Juices Wild.

Day 10 is done! See you next time!

Day 9! I'm very excited to be at this point in our 48 day juice fast and am very pleased to find that it's becoming more and more effortless! To make things better, the weather is warm and gorgeous today!

I weighed myself this morning and at 129 lbs I'm officially back in the 120s! I haven't been in the 120s since 2009 (when I actually ate healthy). I still have some excess fat to lose and tone up but overall I'm looking thin and fit! David has always looked fit but had gained weight in his face and that is all gone now!

We cracked open a young Thai coconut last night and drank a bunch of the water. It was so yummy and I think my body really needed the electrolytes because it was the best thing ever to me. I stored what was leftover in the fridge (that coconut yielded 20 ounces of coconut water--crazy) and I am drinking some more as we speak--so good! If you've never had water fresh from a young Thai coconut, go out and get one now-- you'll be amazed! And if you are on a juice fast, especially long term, it has been recommended in a lot of my research to drink it in order to avoid electrolyte depletion.

So here's the only real problem I've been having on this juice fast, and it's kind of the problem I have in everyday life anyway. I keep forgetting to drink enough water. Since I'm drinking juice all the time anyway, it doesn't occur to me...but then I wake up with dry lips and dry mouth and it's clear. David has had a problem with this too. So, I'm trying something today: I have four 32 ounce mason jars and am filling them with water each day, labeling them accordingly. We'll see how this goes. :)

So far today, I've had one 16 ounce jar of watermelon/cucumber/mint juice, about 4 ounces of coconut water and I'm now getting started on 16 ounces of carrot/beet/ginger juice. :)

Ta ta for now!
It's day 8! 40 days left! David and I feel great. My food cravings have left me for the most part but not David. Part of David's job requires him to go to restaurants and be around people eating so that may be part of the reason the cravings have been harder for him. He also hates chlorella (I mix chlorella powder with 2 glasses of distilled water every day for each of us to drink). He says it tastes gross, but I've always loved the taste of chlorella. He has always had extremely different tastes for food than me (for example, dessert wise, he generally loves light/ fruity and I love savory).

I have been keeping my physical activity down for the most part but I am thinking about starting some yoga since my energy is up a lot more. David played basketball last night though.

Today I am really in a springy/summery hopeful mood (even though the weather is dreary) so I decided to have some watermelon. I made a combination that I love. I call it the Watermelon Cucumber Mint Cooler.

Here's what yields 32 ounces:

1/4 watermelon
1 cucumber
3-4 sprigs of organic mint

Juice it all and you've got a very refreshing spring (or anytime) juice treat!

I bought an entire watermelon for this, so I only used half of it and stored the rest in the fridge. I'm drinking some now, and have stored away one 16 ounce jar and one 32 ounce jar to enjoy with David later.

What I had today before the cooler: kale/cucumber/lemon/green apple juice (16 oz.) and orange/grapefruit/lemon sunshine in a glass juice (16 ounces). If you want the sunshine in a glass recipe, you can get it in my guest blog over here at the screendoor diaries blog.

See you on day 9!
Hi there! It has officially been a week since David and I started this fast! Exciting milestone... but we still have 41 days to go.

I weighed myself this morning and the scale said 130 (down 5 lbs from the start). I have lost some unhealthy chunk on my stomach as well as my arms and legs, but I still have a good bit of that unhealthy fat on my tummy.

I've noticed a surge of energy today that is greater than days before and I've also noticed my happiness level is up. I'm by no means a depressed person normally, but I do feel an improvement in how I feel overall emotionally. :)

So far in our juice fast, we drink our juice right out of the juicer, but I've started to feel like all I'm doing is juicing and cleaning up after juicing, which affects my productivity with my work, etc. So, I decided to carve out two straight hours today to do nothing but juice.

Juicing 2 bunches of kale, 5 cucumbers, 3 apples, 8 tomatoes, 4 celery stalks, 5 lemons, 2 grapefruits, 4 oranges and 1 thumb of ginger yielded 9 jars, or 144 ounces of different types of juice.

When I store juice I fill a 16 ounce mason jar to the very top (to prevent oxidation of the juice), seal it tight and store in the refrigerator right away.

I've also used a sharpie to keep all my batches straight. I got this tip from Kristen Suzanne of Kristen's Raw. Sharpie marker will come off of a mason jar very easily with water and a wash cloth. This batch produced enough juice to last David and I through the rest of today and the first half of tomorrow.
So far today, I have had one 16 ounce jar of carrot,/apple,/ginger juice and one 16 ounce jar of kale/cucumber/lemon/ginger juice. Looking forward to some kale/cucumber/green apple juice and sunshine orange/grapefruit/lemon juice later today. :)Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10454811058165433949noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7699045375177119459.post-41639753057570886852012-02-27T07:57:00.001-08:002012-02-27T08:00:41.059-08:0048 Day Juice Fast: Day 6--Physical updates

Cheers! David and I are on day 6! Energy is up more. I barely ever feel hungry, nor have I had a really hungry moment since this fast started. I've been getting some work done this morning, running off 16 ounces of my Sunshine in a Glass (lemon, orange, grapefruit) juice.

Click here to see our day 5 YouTube update. I have to warn you, the video is pretty funny looking. We filmed it with David's cell phone (so David is only half in the shot) and we abruptly cut it off. After I went on my long talk about food being tied into everything you do, David had nothing else to share so we just cut it there, lol. I mention in this video that doing the "juice feast" idea of 64 ounces to a gallon of juice per day is a huge challenge for us, since we are mainly full on less than 64 ounces each day. We also touch on cravings, emotional ties to food, etc.

A couple physical updates that I have not shared yet. First, David was concerned about "fat face" as he called it. His face has gotten considerably healthier looking in this past week, which is great.

Physical update for me: the last time I weighed myself was two days ago and I was 132 (3 pounds lost). I am at a pretty healthy weight for my body type and height, but I have unwanted fat around my stomach (the most dangerous type of fat is the fat that surrounds your vital organs around the middle) and some on my back as well that I want to shed. My stomach is a bit smaller and though it is still tender, the hiatal hernia pain is nowhere near as severe as it was before. Also, I was taking two medications for acid reflux before this and still being kept up a few times a week until 2 or 3 in the morning with extremely painful heartburn. Now I have NO HEARTBURN and I have been going right to sleep. I stopped taking the medication, since my doctor told me when he first prescribed them that he would prefer if I could treat this problem with my diet and come off them. We'll see how things go when I get back on solids.

That's all for now. About to go have my fresh raw version of V8 and will be following that up with some grrrreen juice! 42 days to go!Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10454811058165433949noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7699045375177119459.post-45169843977219719332012-02-25T18:16:00.003-08:002012-02-26T08:12:57.332-08:0048 Day Juice Fast: Day 4So, day 4 is coming to a close...kind of a weird day. David and I have been craving solid food like crazy. We've been even looking at pictures of food online. I'm dying right now for a vegan tempeh and black olive pizza and it's really hard to come to terms with the idea that I can't actually eat anything for 44 more days.

Last night, David and I went to Buford to watch the movie 'Wanderlust' with my friend Ashley, who was an extra in the movie. It was awesome getting to see her on the big screen. We greeted her by rolling out the red carpet when she showed up at the theater.

Before the movie, we headed over to a great juice bar in Sugar Hill called Juices Wild. The owner, Dan, is extremely knowledgeable. He has juice fasted before, so I have asked him so many questions about healthy juice fasting in the past and of course had more questions for him this time. While there, we grabbed some kelp granules (great iodine and sodium supplementation- highly recommend for juice fasting), a young Thai coconut and I got a wheatgrass shot with ginger and cayenne--yuck! I forgot how much I hated wheatgrass, but that plus a shot of coconut water kept me full for the rest of the night (which was a good thing because right after that we sat in a restaurant with our friends and watched them eat).

Today, to deal with our cravings, we thought it would be a good idea to skip the carrot/ginger/apple juice and green juice we've been having most of the time and go for some raw "V8" style juice.

So what was in it? ALOT: A bunch of tomatoes, a quarter head of cabbage, 3 celery stalks, 2 carrots, 1 chili pepper, half an onion, (do not recommend that much for future batches), 1 green bell pepper, 1 red bell pepper, 1 small beet, 3 kale leaves and 1 clove of garlic.

This yielded about 56 ounces of juice. I also added a bit of Pink Himalayan Salt that was dissolved in water to the juice. We drank as much of it as we could but quickly realized we put way too much onion in it. It was my first time juicing an onion and was not aware how powerful onion juice is. Anyway this is the bulk of what we had today and the sulfur content was a bit too high, so next time, we will be doing a very small amount of onion.

I was very happy to finish off this evening making and enjoying some amazing juice--I had gotten the idea from Dan at Juices Wild, who combines grapefruit, lemon and orange. I added a bit more orange in my version and dubbed the juice with the name, "Sunshine in a Glass"...because that is how it tastes!

As I write this, it is lunch time on day three of my and David's 48 day juice fast. I wanted to share an update yesterday but I never had a chance. In addition to a full day of work, our Company's giveaway drawing was yesterday, so most of my evening was spent sifting through and qualifying over 600 entries.

Yesterday was a tough day, I felt very achy and uncomfortable. I also was so distracted by work that I didn't get enough water, which I'm sure made things worse. David did not seem to have any trouble yesterday besides cravings, which I'm having a lot of too. I've noticed I've been craving things I don't normally crave, strange.

Today I'm feeling a lot better and more energetic. We will be facing a bit of a challenge this evening...going to the movies about an hour away. My friend Ashley was an extra in the new movie "Wanderlust" and we are going to the opening night in support of her (look for a really pretty hippie girl with long deep dark brown hair if you watch the movie)...and we are going to be sitting with a large group of our friends who will undoubtedly be eating popcorn and other foods. I'm thinking about bringing a couple of jars of juice in my purse.

So far at this point, I've had 16 ounces of carrot, apple and ginger juice...
...and in a few minutes I'll be cracking open another 16 ounces of green juice (kale, cucumber, celery, apple, pear, lemon, ginger) that I made earlier.
That's all I've got for now...we'll be doing another video soon!Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10454811058165433949noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7699045375177119459.post-31502729026382710372012-02-22T22:08:00.000-08:002012-02-22T22:08:13.041-08:0048 Day Juice Fast: Day 1 Complete! My husband, David and I have now officially finished a full day of drinking just fresh fruit and veggie juices!

Below is a link to the first video of us talking about our first day and what we hope to get from this.

48 Day Juice Fast: Day 1

One thing we forgot to share in this video is how we felt today. David says he felt pretty normal today and never felt hungry. I felt pretty normal too... except I was a bit more tired than usual...and I'm feeling a little detox queasiness coming on right now.

Someone commented on my post yesterday that they would like to know what kinds of juices we are drinking, so here is a rundown of what we had today:
Morning: carrot, apple, ginger (one 16 oz. glass each)
Lunch and mid afternoon: kale, cucumber, lemon, apple, ginger (two 16 oz. glasses each--to one of these I added chlorella powder and flax oil)
Dinner: pineapple (one 16 oz. glass each)
Here's a little update on what has transpired since December of 2009:

About a third of the way through 2010, after a several months of eating a mostly whole foods diet and drinking fresh vegetable juices, I hit a weak point. I was feeling much better physically, but had become frustrated with the fact that I was the only one eating such a strict diet. I felt kind of like a weirdo in the world of my friends and family, and decided to just give in and start eating "normal" again. It was easy to do, since everyone else was and I had forgotten the physical pain I had felt before. By fall of 2010, my endocrinologist informed me that I had a potentially cancerous nodule on my thyroid gland, which I had biopsied in October. It came back negative, but this scare did not deter me from neglecting my diet.

By spring of 2011, I had discovered that I was no longer having allergic reactions to milk protein and went all in on eating cheeses and creamy foods. Being without dairy for so long and finally having access to it turned me into some kind of crazed monster who knew no sense of moderation. I brought home cheese and pepperoni pizzas more than once a week and I even went through a three or four month phase where I got my "daily milkshake" at the drive thru.

During this time, I gained close to 20 lbs and my heartburn was back and worse than ever. It was so bad, in fact, that my husband rushed me to the emergency room in July because we thought I was having a heart attack. At that point, I was diagnosed with GERD (gastro-esophogeal reflux disease) and was told that I had a hiatal hernia, explaining the incredible pain I experience when anyone or anything touches my stomach.

I continued to ignore these telltale signs during the holidays. I had discovered Pinterest and wanted to try every uber-unhealthy recipe/idea I could pin. By New Years, when I discovered my eczema had returned, I decided I had had enough. I wanted to make significant changes in 2012 to benefit my health, because the chronic pain was no longer worth the taste of what I was putting into my mouth.

In January I tried a 3 day juice fast, just to see how it made me feel. The first day, I felt like crap...but the second and third day, something amazing happened. The pain and sensitivity in my stomach went away completely! The pain came back a day or two after the fast, but this was a tell tale sign to me that my nutrition has everything to do with how I feel. For the past month, I've been eating mostly raw and cooked vegan foods. I've lost some weight and feel a litle better, but it's not 100%.

So here I am, between healthy and sick, and I desperately want to get better...so here's my plan:

-Starting tomorrow (the first day of Lent), I will embark on a 48 day juice fast. Drinking only fresh fruit and veggie juices, supplemented by flax oil and chlorella powder. My amazing husband will be doing this fast with me. Part of his reason is in support of me, and part to make significant changes in his life. I think this long of a fast will reset our bodies' health in a very positive way.

-During the juice fast, I will be sharing updates and videos on this blog to keep in the loop those of you who are curious or who are interested in doing this yourselves.

-As Christians, of course, we thought Lent would be a wonderful time to start this so we could also use this experience to focus on time with God and what He wants our life together to look like.

-After the fast, my husband and I plan to live a healthier lifestyle that will prevent me from the pain I currently experience.

So there it is! Want to share with you guys in this experience that is about to start in, oh, a few hours! Have fun eating! I'm headed to the fridge to eat a papaya, my last solid food for the next 48 days.

Good night!

Today is the day my company has our Christmas luncheon and the gift I bought for our white elephant gift exchange is super lame (deck of cards), but I’m sure it will be fine for the $5 limit we had.

White elephant is a classic tradition and a very good one at that, because it involves choice, it prevents people from spending a fortune and every one gets a gift.

When I was growing up, we had a few traditions at home. We always went as a family to Mike’s Farm on the North Carolina coast to have freshly pressed cider, pick out the perfect Christmas tree and peruse the festively scented gift shop. Although this tradition has faded away with time and the act of our moving to Georgia when I was 14, we have retained the tradition of each opening one gift on Christmas Eve (my brother and I always exchange our gifts to each other on this night).

I’ve also developed the special tradition of a Christmas Eve breakfast with my friends each year, followed by always watching National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation… and going to see a film with my friends at the movie theater every year on Christmas night.

Since this is my second Christmas with my husband, our traditions are still developing- but one we do have is watching a documentary on the star of Bethlehem every year (yes, we are a little nerdy, I guess).

I love traditions. They bring a warmth, excitement and anticipation each year that is very special.

So what are your holiday traditions? Do you have any typical or rare traditions you would like to share?

Yesterday, I had:

1 bowl of gluten free corn flakes with almond milk
1 small order of fries (yeah, I was on the road)
½ roasted eggplant sandwich
½ pita with hummus
10 chlorella tablets
2 cups green juice (cucumber, kale, bok choy, lemon) blended with fresh coconut water
Vinegar slaw
Cornbread made with water
Beans
Creamed corn
1 cup brown rice cereal with almond milk (loving late night cereal lately)
1 tsp bee pollen
6 cups of water

My husband and I threw our annual formal on Friday and it was awesome. The theme was "We <3 the New Millennium". Our music was all from the last decade and our decorations really tied in with the theme this year. I'll post pictures later.

It was a great night and weekend for that matter, but I went to the Korean sauna today to detox from some dietary damage I have done over the past week. I've been abusing the sugar a lot lately, so I've decided to start keeping a record of what I eat each day to keep myself accountable and motivated.

So, here goes... Today, I had:

1 cup of green juice (cucumber, kale, bok choy, lemon)
8 cups of water
1 bowl of brown rice macaroni and homemade vegan cheeze
1 bowl of Korean noodles and broth
1 cup green tea
2 cups green juice (celery, cucumber, lemon, ginger)
2 bowls brown rice cereal with almond milk
10 raw nori bites from Arden's Garden
4 vegan dolmas
1 tsp. bee pollen
3 squares of green and black Mayan Gold dark chocolate

As you can tell, I kinda had a snack attack today, lol- but it is definitely an improvement over the raisin toast with apple butter, sugar packed soy mocha and mound of hash browns with ketchup I had yesterday, among other things.
A few days ago, I was reminded of a short video I saw last year. Then I was reminded of it again today, as the group that made the video was actually featured on the front page of Yahoo.

It really puts into perspective to those of us who celebrate Christmas what it should really be about.
This is my very first blog! I have been wanting to start a blog for quite a while now. The purpose of my desire to regularly post rantings really has to do with my lacking creative outlet at the moment. I was once upon a time a journalist. Now I'm in sales, so I'm hoping this will allow me some creative release.

I also decided to finally start this because I want to document my journey to achieving optimum health. Over the past year, I have encountered a few health issues which include insulin resistance (or pre-diabetes), food allergies and ovarian cysts. After doing quite a bit of research, I have found that, though I cannot control everything, I have had a large hand in my issues due to my diet and physical activity. The scary thing is I did not have a terrible, abusive diet by American standards. In fact, a lot of people I know have always seemed to perceive me as a "health nut". However, here I am, facing a possible unhealthy future because of my diet.

I will be addressing my diet in the next few months and sharing tips, recipes, etc. that I have discovered during my research.

But- I do not intend to be a blogger who simply writes about my health. I want to share the more colorful side of me as well, so you will also be catching some extras on DIY projects, art, film and other fun parts of life (not that optimum health and nutrition isn't important, or fun, but I can appreciate that not all people have the same zest for it that I do).

So, in closing, I look forward to sharing my life and inspiration with you in the future. :)Kellyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10454811058165433949noreply@blogger.com1
